Today's BMW 535i Reflects 45 Years of Bavarian Automotive Engineering Excellence

BMW's venerable 5 Series established the midsize luxury sedan category some 45 years ago, and to provide design context for current models like the BMW 535i BMW 535i, the elite automaker recently introduced a six-part video series on the history of the 5-Series. Below is the first episode, which focuses on the development of the E12 model.

At the time, BMW's 5 Series exterior design and engine technology signaled a whole new era for luxury automobile manufacturing - sleek, forward-leaning lines and powerful, efficient engines marked a sharp departure from the stylings coming out of Detroit.

The current BMW 5 Series - of which the 535i is but one variation - continues to be defined by its now-classic lines and athletic, ready-to-roll stance, as well as its powerful, turbocharged high-tech engines that deliver tremendous horsepower and torque along with fuel efficiency ratings that lead the category.

The 2016 BMW 535i features a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that cranks out 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, and gets the sedan from 0-60 mph in just about five and a half seconds. Inside, luxury accommodations include buttery soft leather upholstery, a large sunroof for star-gazing or tanning, automatic climate control; heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seats and an optional 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system that gives your 535i concert hall-like acoustics.
