2020 BMW 4 Series vs M4: Design Differences

While these two cars share an almost identical platform, there are some design differences that set them apart. The 2020 BMW 4 Series can be had in three different styles: a sleek two-door coupe, a sunny hard-top convertible and a sophisticated four-door gran coupe. The 2020 BMW 430i Gran Coupe even offers up to 45.9 cubic feet of cargo room thanks to its generous rear hatchback! The 2020 BMW M4 can be had in coupe or convertible styles, but the gran coupe isn't available. For legendary BMW M performance with four doors, be sure to check out the BMW M3 sedan.

And while the 2020 BMW 4 Series features an advanced steel frame, the 2020 BMW M4 makes extensive use of lightweight steel, aluminium and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic to reduce weight and lower the center of gravity for a more planted, stable drive.

2020 BMW 4 Series vs M4: Performance Differences

All BMW vehicles are built for inspiring performance, but only BMW's M line is built with true motorsport technology for a track-ready drive. After all, Motorsport is what the BMW "M" division stands for.

At the entry level, the 2020 BMW 430i makes 248 horsepower from its standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine. For even more power, step up to the 2020 BMW 440i with 320 horsepower from a turbocharged six-cylinder engine. But for the most powerful 4 Series drive available, the 2020 BMW M4 comes with a twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine making a staggering 425 horsepower. All that extra power is made possible by a track-grade cooling system and a system of Air Breathers and Air Curtains in the front grille openings for optimal airflow and engine cooling.

The standard 4 Series also provides nimble handling and confident stopping power thanks to a lightweight frame, sport-tuned independent suspension and four-wheel ventilated disc brakes. The 2020 BMW M4 further adds an adaptive M suspension and active M differential for the most aggressive handling response on a closed-circuit course.

However, there is one available performance feature exclusive to the regular 4 Series that you can't get on the M4: xDrive all-wheel drive. With xDrive, you'll have better traction on gravel, sand and wet roads and better grip when accelerating out of a corner. Both the regular 4 Series and the 2020 BMW M4 are rear-wheel drive.

What Do The 2020 BMW 4 Series and M4 Have In Common?

While there are plenty of differences between the premium, powerful 4 Series and the truly track-tuned M4, these cars are built on the same platform and feature much of the same technology. Both vehicles feature modern multimedia systems complete with Apple CarPlay™ and a large 8.8" touch display. You'll also enjoy conveniences and comforts like automatic climate control, ambient lighting, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and a whole lot more.
